There are many WordPress SEO plugins available and it can be difficult to know which ones to install. Below are some of the top WordPress SEO plugins.

SEO Packs

There are a number of WordPress SEO plugins which include many customizable functions:

  • All in One SEO Pack – One of the most well known WordPress SEO plugins which does a bit of everything and can be used “out of the box”. There is a paid version for SEO professionals.
  • FV All In One SEO Pack – A simplified version of the above with a streamlined interface.
  • Platinum SEO Pack – Based on All in One SEO Pack but more advanced.
  • Headspace2SEO – A powerful plugin to manage meta-data and handle a wide range of SEO tasks.
  • SEO Ultimate WordPress Plugin – An all-in-one plugin with many powerful features.
  • Greg’s High Performance SEO – Lots of functionality which avoids the need for some of the plugins below.

The above is not a definitive list and new multifunction WordPress SEO plugins are still appearing. So which to install? Firstly be careful about installing plugins that are still in beta, secondly decide how much you want to get into SEO.

If you are not sure All In One SEO Pack is a good starting point. It is very popular, as evidenced by the more advanced plugins providing a migration path.

Provided the features of these plugins are not included in your SEO Pack plugin the following are useful:

  • Google XML Sitemaps – Generates a site map supported by Google, Bing and Yahoo. Enables the search engines to find and index content quickly.
  • SEO Slugs – A simple plugin that removes common words from slugs (filenames). Makes URLs more search engine friendly.
  • SEO Smart Links – Automatically generates links, both internal and external, within your content (external links can be no follow). Such links will boost your on page SEO.
  • SEO Friendly Images – Automatically updates all images with proper ALT and TITLE attributes. This can be very beneficial for SEO purposes.
  • WP-Super-Cache – Speeds up serving of pages by holding a static copy to avoid database calls. Important because slow loading of pages will have a negative effect on search engine rankings.
  • Redirection – Manages 301 redirections and tracks 404 errors which can then be redirected.
  • SEOPressor – Analyses pages and posts and reports on content optimisation with recommendations. It is vital for SEO purposes that the search engines see your content as highly relevant to the targeted keywords.

SEO Guide For Beginners: Part-1

With this article I am starting the SEO guide, which is dedicated specially to beginners, who have recently started a blog or website either for their business or to make money online. I will cover all the SEO aspects the so called SEO Expert use to rank higher in search engines.

What is SEO?

Let me start with short introduction of What SEO is all about. As the name suggest, SEO means search engine optimization. It involves optimizing your website to rank well for particular search keyword or phrase in Google like major search engines.

Why SEO Is important?

If I need to answer this question in single word, it will be the “Competition”. The main source of website traffic is from search engines. If you are not being listed in search engine, people can not find you or your website because they do not know your website address. Hence it is required to optimize your website and target it for particular keywords. It will help your visitors to find you easily in search engine result pages.

What are the main parts of SEO?

There are only two main parts of SEO, one is On-Page SEO and another is Off-Page SEO.  On-page SEO is what you can directly do on your web page and the Off-Page SEO is what you do on other websites to build backlinks and improve value of your website on Internet.

SEO Misconceptions – How to Tell If Your SEO Expert Is Really an Expert

Search Engine Optimization or SEO, is probably the single most important factor in determining the success or failure of a website. Yet the majority of web designers and web development companies know very little about SEO, and a lot of what they do know is inaccurate or outdated. There are several myths and misconceptions about SEO. If you are talking to a web designer about SEO, and they begin to talk about any of these popular misconceptions, walk away and find a real SEO expert.

  1. SEO is about optimizing your pages, titles and meta-data and keyword tags. If this is your Web Designer / SEO experts idea of SEO, it is a sure-fire sign that they are clueless. Sure you will want to make sure your page has the right words in all the right places, but that is not the first or most important part of SEO. Research is the most important factor in a good SEO campaign. You have to know what those “right” keywords are. Most designers will ask you, “What keywords do you want us to use in optimizing your site?” This is an extremely flawed approach. Figuring out what keywords are best for you should be the SEO expert’s job, not yours. An SEO expert should be able to analyze hundreds if not thousands of keywords related to your business, determine the traffic and strength of the competition for each one and give you a list of the best keywords for your site. Research and find the right keywords before you start making any changes to your website.
  2. Keyword stuffing. Every webpage has meta data, this is information about the page that is in the HTML source code, that search engines can read, but is not visible on the page. One the meta-tags is called keywords. This is where you can place all the terms that your page that are relevant. For example if you are a Border Collie breeder then, “border collie breeder, border collie, border collie for sale” are relevant keywords. This tag has been so misused and abused that Google no longer uses it to determine the placement of a website.
  3. Having and using a Google AdWords account will help you rank higher. Don’t buy it. Using Google AdWords has absolutely no effect on your search engine results placement.
  4. Masking text will improve your SEO. This is old technique where you add a ton of keywords to your site, but make them the same color as your background so that they are invisible. The logic here is that search engines (Google) reads the source code and sees the keyword “Border Collie breeders” (following our previous example) used many times on your page. Google then says to itself, this site must provide a lot of information on border collies and gives you a higher ranking. This is unfortunately a common technique. What Google really says is “wow, these guys think we are really stupid, and are using cheap and misleading tricks, we should remove them from our index completely and spare our users waste of time it would be to visit this site.” The technical term for this is to be de-indexed or placed in the Google Sandbox.
  5. SEO is an ongoing effort. This one is partly true, and most SEO experts will say the exact opposite. As an SEO expert I would certainly love to have customers contracted to me for SEO work every month. In some cases this is necessary. A real estate agent in a very competitive market would likely need to continually work on their SEO in order to maintain a steady amount of targeted traffic coming to their site. On the other hand if you sell mail-order wheat grass cookies, one strong SEO campaign may keep you at the top of the search engines for years, so why pay for ongoing SEO services.
  6. We will submit your site to over X number of search engines. This is a popular one. The truth is the three top search engines process 95% search requests, Google alone accounts for more than 80%. You used to have to submit your site URL to search engines and directories in order to get indexed. That is not the case any longer, in my experience submitting a site to Google results in a longer wait time before it is indexed that using my SEO methods.
  7. Guaranteed SEO results. If your SEO expert owns Google or Yahoo, then a guarantee like that might mean something. I could accurately guarantee your site will be on the first page of Google, but what you won’t know is this;
  • It will be for a keyword so obscure that it has little to know competition.
  • I will use a Pay- Per-Click campaign to get your site placed on the first page of Google. In other words, we will buy you a place on the first page at a certain amount of money per click. This means either you as the customer must keep paying for each click, that by buying your way to the top, they met their guarantee and end the PPC campaign.

So how do you get real SEO results? The single best method is to get other websites to provide links back to your site. If these are quality sites, from several different IP addresses and ISPs then it will definitely improve your SEO rankings. Experienced SEO experts will employ various tactics and techniques to get this done in an ethical manner. They will have tools and services available to them to make this daunting task much easier. If you are willing to do much of the work yourself, you can do some cheap seo work on your own and get some fairly good results. What are the best methods and tactics for getting these backlinks? The Job Market in the SEO Industry

Are you a writer or programmer looking for jobs in the SEO industry? It you have already typed in a query into Google or Yahoo, you’ll notice that there are all kinds of different SEO jobs. SEOs have branched into SEO consultants who will give a specialized expertise in the very wide field of online marketing. SEO jobs are very popular and the skill sets of a SEO professional are in demand. Here are the kinds of SEO field that may work best for your particular skills.

1. The Technician. Is a regular programmer who does URL rewrites, server redirects, lots of code and site constructions. Essentially a tech-y, these guys will reconstruct or construct websites to make them easy for search engine spiders to crawl through. If you have taken a course in programming, have work experience as a server manager, or if you are naturally technically minded and self taught, then this branch of SEO expertise is for you. The drop description would have you managing content in the system and databases, fixing structural problems of the website and plugging in 301 redirects for deleted pages.

2. The even more Tech-y Technician. This is level two of the SEO tech-y, the geekier SEO. These guys to the more complicated technical jobs in the SEO field, they do research into the algorithms used by search engines. They try to figure out how the spider moves in order to predict its directions and decisions. And they test the SEO readiness of websites. These jobs need a high level of academic and technical understanding of search engines and the workings of online marketing.

3. The Search Engine Marketing Specialist. An aggressive website marketing plan would include both search engine marketing and search engine optimization jobs. Search engine marketing or SEM is different from SEO in that SEM advertises through a paid service such as a Pay per Click service, ads and banners. A large website would need to use both SEO and SEM and find somebody who can do both jobs. This is a select group of people who have learned both paths.

4. The PR manager. SEO is like Press Representation, except it is on the internet and not in print media. If you are good in PR or have some real world experience, your skills will readily translate to skills needed for special SEO jobs. A SEO PR will keep up communications with newsfeeds and interest hubs to create a buzz for their client’s website. A PR doing SEO finds ways to build links to their website from news and article pieces. A press release that drives in traffic to the website by publishing in influential, authority websites.

5. Marketing. All SEO jobs are geared towards some kind of marketing. But marketing online is also a specialization that requires creating marketing campaign strategies and finding ways to execute them on the internet. These jobs mean doing research on the best keywords, finding online demand that are of interest to your client, and then using this knowledge to get an edge over other websites in the same industry. It is part target consumer research and trend watcher. All this information will translate into finding the best SEO strategy for a client.

6. The Marketing Manager or Director. If you have a marketing executive then you have a marketing manager. This is a big job that mostly involves organizing other SEO experts. The manager and his team come up with a strategy. The manager puts the strategy into action by coordinating a team to work towards their SEO goals. These jobs need managerial skills and personal skills both in real life and online. They need to have a talent for communication, especially since online etiquette is very different and miscommunication is easy to come across.

Finding actual SEO jobs for you will mean determining your own skill sets, what you think you have to offer, then matching it with the demand in the internet jobs market. SEO is presenting a website to be favoured by search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. The search engines pick the best websites to present to the internet user according to a certain criteria. This criteria changes regularly so the SEO professional needs to keep up.
